Watching slugs and snails move around a bowl - contender for the most boring youtube video you've ever watched.

We stock Copper Tape at Agile Home and Garden, and one of the questions I 'm always asked is does it really work against slugs and snails? Today, we'll be putting it to the test!

I've used copper tape to stop slugs and snails for years, and I've always sworn by it - however, a quick google search will throw up tonnes of conflicting results. It seems some people love it and some people think it's rubbish.

But how is it supposed to even work? The truth is no one really knows, but there's a whole bunch of theories.

I've read people say the edge of the copper tape is too sharp for them to travel over, I've heard people say the copper causes a chemical reaction in their slime, or even that the copper causes a minute electrical current to flow via their slime. Whatever the true mechanisms behind it, copper has been used by gardeners to deter and repel slugs and snails for decades. But does it really work?

In our tests we lined the inside of a bowl with copper tape, and put slugs inside to see if they could escape, and to see what their reaction to the copper was.

The slugs and snails were captured in our garden and released afterwards - no slugs or snails were harmed during the making of this programme!

Though this exercise was by no means a scientific experiment, for me it confirmed my belief that copper is an effective, (if not 100% effective) tool to deter slugs and snails.
