Data-East are semi-legendary in the arcade heydays of the late 80s with a variety of successful games, some of which got ported to the console. One lesser game they had ported was Midnight Resistance, a game similar to Contra with veins of Escape From New York.
Hitoshi Sakimoto, long before he would become the composer for all things Ivalice, did a lot of musical work in the olden days along these lines, including the rather fantastic Genesis/Mega Drive port of Midnight Resistance, managing to keep the dystopian vibe with a mournful aura of the first stage about it. It's up to you to decide whether the arcade original is better or not, but Sakimoto did a damn good job with the capabilities of the Genesis/Mega Drive sound chip.
