Hello! Welcome to my channel. Please be sure to like & subscribe (if you haven't already).
This video was part of a Master's Degree College course I took concerning the American Civil War. I did all of the research and cited everything. In the bottom of my description will be my citations for all of my research. I kept all of my old College papers and will be doing similar videos concerning the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, etc. I already put in all of the hard work years ago compiling these papers, so why not share them?! Making these videos is a new hobby for me, I hope you enjoy.
The Battle of the Crater, also known as the Battle of the Mine was part of the Petersburg siege of 1864. This was according to General Grant “one of the saddest things I have ever witnessed.” Over 6,000 men were killed in just a few acres of land on that hot July day back in 1864. An Anthracite Coal Mining Engineer from Pennsylvania (now an officer in the Union Army) headed the 48th Infantry Regiment (which now had many former civilian Anthracite coal miners in its ranks). The infantrymen and their commander conceived of a plan to tunnel under Confederate fortifications similar to that of an Anthracite Coal Mine, place black powder under them, blast the tunnel & overrun their positions, thus ending the Petersburg siege. Both sides had resorted to digging trenches prior to the "mine" idea which was rare for the American Civil War. Outdated Napoleonic tactics were hallmarks of this conflict, yet in 1863 (Vicksburg, Mississippi) & in Petersburg, Virginia (1864) saw the hellish futuristic warfare techniques of World War One. Vicksburg the year prior had also seen the advent of mine tunnels being dug, packed with powder, detonated & followed up with huge infantry attacks. The Battle of the Crater however would be a hellish event for Federal Union forces.
Be sure to watch/hear the full length video to see what happens. May all combatants of this horrible War rest in eternal peace.
