Right next door to three-time Presidents Cup venue Royal Melbourne Golf Club is arguably metroplitan Melbourne’s best public access golf course: Sandy Golf Links.
Formerly known as Sandringham Golf Course, ‘Sandy’ was redesigned by the team at OCM which includes 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking and Ashley Mead. Ogilvy grew up around the corner from Sandy and it’s where he played most of his earliest games of golf.
The newly designed Sandy takes inspiration from several Melbourne Sandbelt courses with its style of bunkering and slick putting surfaces. The greens are Sutton’s mix and their surrounds are fescue which is the same combination of grasses used over the road at Royal Melbourne.
Another notable feature of Sandy is its double green, shared by the fifth and 10th holes, which is based on Kingston Heath Golf Club’s double green on its eighth and 16th holes.
