Star Trek: Conquest
For a long time, I legit thought Conquest was the same game as Encounters. It wasn't until last month when I was looking up this game that I found out it's actually a different game, whops. This game uses the same engine as Encounters did but with a slight modification ( or if it's the other way around ), for example you no longer can change your altitude in relations to others. It is also a simplified loose interpretation of an strategy game.
I hesitate to call this game bad, but I have to say it's very much a budget game. It was meant to mainly generate cash and nothing else really. However, what this ended up creating is a game with a rather addicting style of gameplay when you just want something simple to play yet stimulating enough for your mind.
The game is centered around building 3 buildings - Starbase, to repair, provide defense, and build new ships. A mining colony, to generate wealth. A research facility, to upgrade your ships, mining efficiency, cost of leaders etc and to generate your nation's superpower.
I have to say it amuses me greatly that Klingon's superpower is none other, than the Genesis device.
So you move your ships along space, taking over systems as you see fit, build starbases and mining facilities or research stations while struggling to fight off your enemies. It's a simple premise that makes for engaging gameplay - hence why this video ended up being over 2 hours looong. It just got it's hooks into me and was a lot of fun to keep playing to it's conclusion, as the Romulans.
I haven't read the manual nor looked it up but I would suspect empire differences is a thing. At least when you compare the Federation's phaser spam and how fast it hits contrast to Plasma Disruptors and Klingon Disruptors. Good thing! Though I could not find Cloak at all so maybe Romulans don't have any. Unlockable factions exists as well in the game providing even more gameplay opportunity.
Looking for a simple game to spend a few hours on? You can't go wrong with this one.
