Two new storms have formed in the last couple of days, with Cyclone Biparjoy throwing up an impressive intensification bout earlier today taking it up to Category 1 strength on the Saffir Simpson Scale. Tropical Storm Guchol also formed earlier in the Philippine Sea, and is intensifying much more slowly than its Indian Ocean counterpart. Both systems are expected to become major cyclones and could affect land this weekend and early next week.
Cyclone Biparjoy's track and intensity forecast remains very uncertain, and its tight core is likely to keep forecasters guessing. The latest models have suggested a northerly turn past Oman and towards Iran and western Pakistan for a potential landfall. Either scenario is still very possible and could be at a dangerous strength, along with flooding rainfall.
Tropical Storm Guchol is likely to impact the Ogasawara island chain this weekend with typhoon conditions possible. Heavy rainfall is also expected to sweep southern Japan as the storm enhances a low pressure trough to its north.
