Ukraine shares borders with NATO member states Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia -- all of which joined NATO after the end of the Cold War. Why did NATO expand after the Cold War? Was NATO enlargement driven primarily by old NATO member countries like the United States, or by the new member states themselves?
