The violence of July 26 managed to attract all the media attention to the long pending border dispute between Assam and Mizoram. However, the lesser known fact is that the series of clashes between the states started in October 2020. Several agitators even blocked the National Highway 306, which connects Vairengte in Kolasib district of Mizoram to southern Assam. The highway that acts as the lifeline for Mizoram remained non-operational for nearly 12 days. But, at the heart of the inter-state border row lies an unresolved 165-kilometre long interstate border the root of which lies way back in history, when India was still under British rule. It was during the British era when a 1875 notification framed under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 demarcated the then Lushai Hills from Cachar in Assam. The attempt was to introduce Inner Line Permit to protect tribes from influences of plainsmen. In 1933, another notification was issued that demarcated a boundary between Lushai Hills and Manipur. This time, the demarcation was based on culture and linguistics. In 1972, Mizoram became a Union Territory and was carved out of Assam. It later gained statehood in 1987. Now, while Mizoram still follows the 1875 demarcation, Assam follows the 1933 notification.
