Alligator gar is probably the best fighting fish you can catch in Texas in fresh water. My buddy Cody and I went out for a morning of fishing and got bites pretty much immediately. These gar have super hard mouths which makes it very difficult to set the hook and keep one hooked. We had a few bites early but couldn't get a good hook set. The third bite we had it was game on. We ended up landing the only gar of the day which was about four and half feet long. We used cut shad for bait and they seemed to love it. The bite got slower and slower as the day went on. We packed up and headed home. The next day I took my wife grandfather out to the river to do a little fishing. The bite was slow but we still managed to catch a few fish for lunch.
