Daniel Glover, pianist
John Corigliano’s Fantasy on an Ostinato was composed in 1985 for the Van Cliburn Competition as a required piece. It is based on the iconic distinctive simple rhythmic and harmonic theme of the slow movement to Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. Corigliano makes the most of the rhythm by presenting it in different speeds, volumes, and registers. There are minimalist tendencies which result in a section that is largely left to the interpreter to decide on the numbers of repetitions of patterns and the order those patterns. Near the end the composer reveals Beethoven’s original theme as if to show the source of the material. The piece shows what can be done with harmony and rhythm and a conspicuous absence of melody. In one sense Corigliano has utilized Beethoven’s own methods of making something great out of nothing. It is a masterpiece of 20th Century piano writing, and provides the listener with a calming meditation.
