Elaboration of a Strategy for the Reduction of Carbon Emissions in Trinidad and Tobago
The Ministry of Planning and Development in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held the final stakeholder consultation in a series of consultations for the past three months to present and refine the activities and timelines necessary to implement a Carbon Reduction Strategy (CRS) in the three sectors; transport, industrial and electrical power generation. The strategy aims to achieve the carbon reduction target of 15% by 2040 which will amount to 169.2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. There are forty-three (43) measures within the CRS, each with its own activities and timelines to ensure it is realized. Stakeholders from each of the three sectors as well as ‘cross-cutting sectors’, i.e. organizations that impact all three sectors such as the Central Bank, CSO, Ministry of Finance, Office of the Prime Minister etc. met to discuss and agree upon the successful implementation of the action plans for this project.
The CRS has also formed the basis of Trinidad and Tobago's intended Nationally Determined Contributions (iNDCs), which has been submitted to the United Nations, as part of the global efforts at addressing climate change currently being negotiated under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The most recent, and final stakeholder consultation was held on Friday November 13, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
