I want to give you two reasons to work on drawing hands.
First, if you’re having trouble drawing hands, more than likely you’re going to (maybe even subconsciously) draw characters in poses that either hide hands all together, or in poses that minimize actions that require hands doing things...you don’t want to be limited in that way.

Even more importantly, I think, you don’t ever want to get into the mindset where you shy away from drawing things simply because you find them difficult.

In this video I break the lesson into three parts.

•In Step 1: we draw cartoon hands holding a sword handle and baseball bat.

•In Step 2: we build on the first step, drawing cartoon hands holding a wine glass and ice cream cone.

•In Step 3: we level up, drawing the hands in more difficult pose, holding a paint brush and pencil.

You'll notice I use colored pencils in the early steps of my hand drawings. I do so to make it easy to see each separate step in the process. While you're free to draw with any pencil, pen, marker, or digital pad you wish, I recommend keeping it as simple as possible. And it doesn’t get more simple than a pencil and paper.
