(12 Sep 2021) JESSICA CHASTAIN BRINGS 'THE UNFORGIVEN' TO TIFF
Jessica Chastain returned to the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday (11SEPT2021) with "The Forgiven." It's the first of two films for the Golden Globe winning actress.
The film takes place over a weekend in the mountains of Morocco and explores the impact that a random accident has on the lives of local Muslims and Western visitors.
While Chastain believes the story differs from the situation in Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal and Taliban takeover, she hopes that the humanity is relatable.
"Hopefully when you make a film it can relate to anybody, you know, that's your goal. I find that as a woman I feel a closeness and a sisterhood with women all over the world. And I hope that anything that I make will somehow connect that even stronger," Chastain said.
As for shooting on location in Morocco, Chastain called the experience "a very special chapter" in her life.
"It was magical and spiritual, and so for me it was very special."
Chastain hopes audiences see the broader message the film conveys.
"Well, the question, I guess you think at the at the end is who is the unforgiven and is it one person to another or is it us to ourselves? Are we able to forgive ourselves for the blinders that we intentionally put on and then pretend, aren't there in terms of society and those that benefit from privilege and those that do not in terms of economic, class, race, gender and sexual identity preference," she said.
Directed and adapted for the screen by John Michael McDonagh, the story is based on the novel by Lawrence Osborne.
The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Mourad Zaoui, and Matt Smith.
"The Forgiven" currently doesn't have a release date.
