Lola versus Powerman and The Moneygoround, Part One – often abbreviated to Lola Versus Powerman, or just Lola, is the eighth studio album by the Kinks, recorded and released in 1970. The album is a satirical look at the various facets of the music industry, including song publishers ("Denmark Street"), unions ("Get Back in Line"), the press and the hit-making machine ("Top of the Pops"), accountants and business managers ("The Moneygoround") and the road ("This Time Tomorrow").
Before the release of Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One the band discussed the possibility of it being released as a double album. According to Doug Hinman's book, The Kinks: All Day and All of the Night, a sequel album was planned for release sometime in 1971, but was ultimately scrapped and the band opted to record Muswell Hillbillies instead.
Lola was the first single from the album. Due to its controversial subject matter and use of the brand name Coca-Cola, the single received backlash and even bans in Britain and Australia. The single version (mono) used the words "cherry cola" while the album version (stereo) uses the name "Coca-Cola". The track has since become one of The Kinks' most iconic and popular songs.
The song have been covered by among others The Raincoats, Madness and Damon Albarn (& Einar Örn Benediktsson) – where extracts of this track are used throughout the movie "101 Reykjavik" (directed by Baltasar Kormákur), and appear on the soundtrack album under various titles ("Flamenco Lola", "Teapot" and "Dub Lola"). Lola is actually also one of the main characters in the film – a Spanish flamenco instructor with a carpe-diem attitude.
Tracks from Lola versus Powerman have also been featured in other films – one of the most notable uses of songs from the album was when "This Time Tomorrow", "Strangers", and "Powerman" were featured in the 2007 Wes Anderson film The Darjeeling Limited.
("Weird Al" Yankovic created a parody of the song called "Yoda", featuring lyrics about the Star Wars character.)
