More than half of the world’s populations live in cities, which are growing at a steady rate. In the past, artists living in low-income neighborhoods made those places desirable for real estate developers, thus artists became known as gentrifying agents. Now artists and art professionals are working on new forms of urban growth to get ‘in front’ of change and participate in equitable possibilities. Is this realistic? Can art be part of community building in which the community is empowered and not displaced? What are possible solutions to sustaining healthy urban growth for all of its citizens?
