adapted from Ray Crick's 2002 CD liner notes:
Hoagy Carmichael, singer, pianist, cornetist, bandleader, actor and lyricist, was perhaps the most quintessentially American songwriter of them all. He distilled a distinctly Mark Twain vision of rural America into such songs as Rockin' Chair.
As a singer, Hoagy's intonation was perhaps 'uncertain' and his vocal range decidedly limited (he referred to his frequently off-key voice as "flatsy through the nose"). But he sang with an engaging simplicity, as can be heard in his own classic Stardust, the most recorded song in history (over 1300 versions!).
