This is a bit of an unusual destination, but we recently travelled to the Balkans to Bosnia & Herzegovina. This was after a wild transit detour taking up an entire day from Kuala Lumpur to Doha to Istanbul before finally making it to Sarajevo due to flight departure delays in KLIA.
Bosnia's a beautiful and scenic but once war-torn country, having seen both the beginning of World War I as well as, more recently, the Bosnian War in the early 90's which broke up former Yugoslavia. As a result, many buildings particularly along the north bank of the Miljacka River running through Sarajevo remain scarred with bullet holes from small arms fire, while numerous areas are marked for still active landmines far outside the cities.
If you're interested in travelling to Europe without the weight of the Euro bearing down on our wallets, this is a fantastic destination that's rich in history and culture - with plenty of heart. With about half its population being Muslim, halal food will be an easy find for Muslim travellers.
