Feeling overwhelmed, confused, or frustrated between these ingredients in your Acne skincare products? Read on!

Keep in mind, everyone's skin is unique. Different people's skin may respond differently to these ingredients. The only way to know:

- Which products work best with your skin type
- Which protocol works best with your skin type
- Which products give the most favorable results

is through TRIAL and ERROR.

1. BENZOYL PEROXIDE

Benzoyl Peroxide is not only used to fight Acne, but is also used for hair lightening, teeth whitening, and lightening foods, such as flour, cereals, and cheeses.

Benzoyl Peroxide is in the Peroxide family and also produces Benzoic Acid and Oxygen. This is important because Benzoyl Peroxide introduces Oxygen to your skin and the Acne-causing bacteria only survives in "anaerobic conditions" which means "without Oxygen".

When Benzoyl Peroxide introduces Oxygen to the skin, it creates an inhospitable environment for the Acne-causing bacteria. It also reduces the amount of oil (which Acne bacteria feeds on).

Some side effects of using Benzoyl Peroxide may include:

- Bleaching materials it comes into contact with, like: Hair, clothing, sheets, towels, etc.
- Excessive dryness, flakiness, itchiness
- Severe rashes, crustiness, swelling

Benzoyl Peroxide is NOT recommended for sensitive skin types, Eczema, Psoriasis, and Rosacea.

Bezoyl Peroxid IS recommended for red papules, red pustules, and cystic breakouts.

Benzoyl Peroxide is MORE drying than Salicylic Acid.

2. SALICYLIC ACID

Salicylic Acid is derived from bark of the Willow tree and an extract from Wintergreen leaves.

Where Bezoyl Peroxide reduces the amount of Acne-causing bacteria on the skin, Salicylic Acid increases the skin cell turnover rate.

Salicylic Acid also has some antifungal properties, anti-inflammatory properties, and is "keratolytic" meaning it "breaks down dead skin cells".

Salicylic Acid is BEST for people who have more congestion, clogged pores, whiteheads, blackheads

If you have clogged pores, whiteheads, or blackheads, Salicylic Acid sloughs off the dead skin cells and helps unclog pores so oil can come up onto the surface of the skin.

The side effects of using Salicylic Acid may include:

- Redness, itchiness, flakiness, stinging, and dryness

To combat the dryness and irritation, use a hydrating gel-based serum or lightweight moisturizer (if your skin will not breakout more with a moisturizer).

3. RETINOIDS

RETIN-A:

- Is Vitamin A (a.k.a. Tretinoin)
- Stronger
- Needs to be prescribed by a Dermatologist

RETINOL:

- A derivative of Vitamin A
- Not as strong
- Can be found over-the-counter
- Do not need a prescription
- Takes longer to see results

Both increase the skin cell turnover rate, reduce amount of clogged pores, and both MAY increase breakouts, redness, flakiness, itchiness, and peeling.

Retinoids may NOT be suitable for sensitive skin types, Rosacea, Psoriasis, Eczema, or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Retinoids may also come under different names, such as Differin, Adapalene, Renova, or Epi-Duo, which is a combination of Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide.

If you have extremely oily skin or very tough, tolerant skin, you may respond very well to Retinoids.

You need to AVOID using other exfoliating products or waxing services on your face when using Retinoids.
