STORYLINE:

Clashes broke out in the West Bank village of Budrus for a second day on Wednesday, with residents demonstrating against the Israeli separation barrier and clashing with Israeli troops.

A couple of protesters were reported injured after border police fired rubber bullets and tear gas.

Budrus is southeast of Tel Aviv, near the Israeli-Palestinian border, where bulldozers are clearing ground to construct part of a 750-kilometre (450 mile) barrier around the West Bank.

Israel says the partially built network of walls, razor wire and trenches is necessary to keep Palestinian suicide bombers out of Israel.

But Palestinians say the barrier amounts to a seizure of land on which they hoped to build a state.

The construction of the wall has also attracted strong criticism from the international community, who says it prejudices future peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat urged the international community to ensure the road map be implemented.

Arafat's comments came as US President Bush called on Israel to stop settlement construction and dismantle unauthorised outposts in the West Bank - two of Israel's road map obligations- in his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Without mentioning Arafat, Bush also said, "Peace will not be achieved by Palestinian rulers who intimidate opposition, tolerate corruption, and maintain ties to terrorist groups."
