Dr. Nicholas Campitelli discusses how a big toe fracture can be hidden under the great toenail. The toenail needs to be surgically removed and the nailbed needs to be inspected for a laceration which could be hiding under the toenail. This is known as a compound or open fracture under the nail plate. These need to be repaired with sutures to prevent infection from occurring to the bone under the toenail.
