I don't know if I can say that this piece of music is my favorite of the whole Ring, but I know that I love it from the bottom of my heart and it's one of the best compositions I've ever heard. Wotan bids farewell to Brünnhilde with much pain in his heart: he loves her, but due to his need to keep his status and power, he is forced to punish her. This is the most quoted theme in the Ring: love in exchange for power.
