Jean-Pierre Rampal (1922-2000)
Born in Marseille, he was taught flute by his father Joseph, who was a professor at the Conservatory. He initially aspired to the medical path and went on to medical college at the age of 18, but under the influence of World War II he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1943 and graduated with the First Prize in just five months. He studied under Gaston Krunel at the Paris Conservatory. He has been a member of the Vichy Opera Orchestra since 1946, winning the Geneva International Music Competition in 1947 and starting solo. He has been the principal player of the Paris Opera Orchestra since 1956.
