A Māori politician in New Zealand was forced to leave Parliament’s chambers for not wearing a necktie. Rawiri Waititi, co-leader of the Māori Party, was wearing a traditional Māori pendant.
The day after Waititi’s removal, the House speaker held a debate about removing the tie rule, and it was dropped. Waititi has referenced to the Western necktie as a “colonial noose” on multiple occasions.
