Exercise 1: Straw slide
Grab a drinking straw, submerge it in water, and sing into the straw. We want bubbles and sound at the same time. This is great for beginners, because it helps us balance our airflow and align our vocal folds in the gentlest way possible. Choose any warmup pattern to sing through the straw; you can even sing the melody of a song!
Exercise 2: Chest voice “oh no, you don’t”
Some beginners are unaware that their speaking voice IS part of their singing voice. Sometimes we call it “chest voice” or “chest register”. But just think: speaking on pitch.
Exercise 3: Head Woo-hoo (or Woo-woo) 5-54321
We also have another “mode” or “register”, sometimes called head voice. Because most of us don’t use this sound in daily life, it often feels very weak and unstable. That’s normal! Get into this mode with a “woo-hoo” sound, and then keep singing.
Exercise 4: Register-switching AH-oo 1 8 5 3 1
Many beginners find it difficult to transition from low to high or high to low. Nice, strong speaking voice sound on the bottom, and the rest can be light and thin-sounding.
Exercise 5: Register-blending AH-oo-AH 181
This may be a challenge! Use that same strong AH and light oo, but this time we’re sliding between the two. It’ll be even smoother the more gradually you shift between AH and oo.
