DIY step by step oil and filter change with fluid extractor on Mercedes R129 300SL and W124 with M104 engine. Those with R129 500SL, R107, W202 and W140 will also find this video helpful.
Video shows all details including how much oil is left in the engine after the fluid extractor has completed its job. Very little oil is left.
Parts/Tools Used:
Engine Oil: Castrol 10W40 (Check your MB Owner's Manual)
Oil Filter: HU 727/1x (Made in Germany)
Interchange Filters - Hengst E142H D21; Mahle OX 133D
Oil Filter Wrench: 74mm, 14 flute (Amazon, Auto parts stores)
Oil Extractor: MitVac Fluid Extractor Plus
Please check your local or online parts retailers for exact size for your model.
More Tips (not shown in video):
1) Engine oil additives like LiquiMoly anti-wear additives are good to use regularly and occasionally.
2) Always wipe the extractor hose with a lint free cloth before putting it into the dipstick hole. You don't want to bring any contaminants/dirt into the engine.
Update: After filming, I did an accurate measure of old oil left in the car. It was about 300 mL (10 oz).
The entire process takes about 20 to 25 minutes.
Car shown in video: 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300SL R129 (M104.980)
