Should I eat when I’m hungry? Diet culture VS real life
I often see this « tip » that states that you should only eat when you’re hungry enough to eat something like plain lettuce, raw broccoli, or a bowl of kale. According to this « tip », if you aren’t willing to eat any of these things, then you aren’t actually hungry and you should go drink some water instead.
This is completely ridiculous, of course. If you feel hungry, then you deserve to eat, even if the thought of eating an entire lettuce head doesn’t necessarily appeal to you.
When you’re hungry, your body will crave nutrient and calorie-dense foods to fill it up, not salad. That doesn’t mean that you should never eat salad, of course, just that your desire to eat it or not shouldn’t be an indication of whether you’re allowed to eat or not.
You’re also allowed to eat foods just because you enjoy the taste.
If it’s genuinely difficult for you to know whether you’re hungry or not, and if you are trying to be more in tune with your hunger cues, I really suggest looking into more mindful and intuitive eating. I have a lot of resources available on my channel!
