Best practice for tunnel construction in a mixed face which is defined as part earth and part rock. In this illustration the earth was supported by soldier piles and lagging. The rock was removed by drilling and blasting and is self supporting. Rock blasting results in an irregular surface which must be prepared for the permanent structure with mud slabs, sand walls and waterproofing.
