This Boeing video, shot with an infrared camera from the cockpit of the YAL-1 Airborne Laser (ABL) prototype shows the Aug. 10 test in which a low-power surrogate laser engaged a target missile off the California coast. The bright sport moving from lower left to upper right is the Terrier Lynx/Black Brandt instrumented target missile. The first two bright spots to approach the missile are the tracking laser and atmospheric compensation laser. Then finally the surrogate hgih-energy laser illuminates the target. A lethal shoot-down test against a ballistic missile using the real high-energy laser is planned for later this year.
