On June 18, Dr. Anthony Fauci, M.D., released his New York Times bestselling memoir, “On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service.” In it, he reflects on a truly remarkable career in U.S. government leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984-2022, during which he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and served seven presidents. This included a turbulent relationship with former President Donald Trump during the Covid-19 pandemic, a period of acute polarization and toxicity in which Dr. Fauci became a target. His pioneering work on HIV/AIDS stretched from the very beginning in 1981 up until his retirement in 2022 and beyond. At the same time, he laid the foundations for U.S. approaches to health security in the face of pandemic flu, SARS, Ebola, Zika, and Covid-19.
