Wat Tham Rong (Thai: วัดถ้ำรงค์) is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Phetchaburi Province of Thailand.
A notable feature of the temple is the nearby Tham Luang Pho Dam cave, where the revered Buddha statue, Luang Pho Dam, is enshrined. This sacred statue was carved from a piece of stone attached to the cave's wall, demonstrating ancient craftsmanship. The entire statue, weighing 10 tons, is supported by the cave wall.
Luang Pho Dam dates back to the late Dvaravati period, over a thousand years ago. Originally, it was blackened using color derived from betel palm, earning it the name "Luang Pho Dam" (revered father black). Over time, the black faded to a pale reddish-brown. The lower part of the statue, from the waist down, was carved from the cave's stone, while the upper part was fashioned from sandstone. The statue exhibits characteristics of Gupta art from India, with features such as thick lips, curly hair, and a large head. Ankles adorned with chains are part of a legend that claims the statue would leave the cave at dusk to woo young women, prompting villagers to tether it.
Additionally, the cave features stalactites carved with reliefs depicting stories of the Lord Buddha. Though time has eroded many of these carvings, some details remain visible today.
