(6 Oct 2021) The son and namesake of the late Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who was toppled 35 years ago, formally registered his bid for the presidency on Wednesday.
Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, known as Bongbong, filed his certificate of candidacy in the capital Manila, ahead of presidential elections next year.
The 64-year-old said he would unite Filipinos in the face of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis.
His father was ousted in a 1986 army-backed "people power" uprising and died in exile in Hawaii three years later. He and his family were accused of amassing an estimated $5 billion to $10 billion while he was in power.
Marcos Jr. is the latest to express his intention to succeed President Rodrigo Duterte, an ally of the Marcos family.
He's one of at least eight politicians and celebrities who said they'll run for president or lower posts, including Vice President Leni Robredo, who leads the opposition.
Marcos Jr. narrowly lost to Robredo in the 2016 vice presidential race and then unsuccessfully contested alleged election irregularities.
