Inspired by the aviation industry’s black box, the OR Black Box is a sophisticated system of sensors and software that captures data with the goal of minimizing risks and improving patient outcomes. The inventor of the OR Black Box, Teodor Grantcharov, MD, PhD, FACS, who also is the associate chief quality officer for innovation and safety for Stanford Healthcare and professor of surgery at Stanford University, discusses the role of this technology in enhancing safety and efficiency in the OR.
