Welcome to Home Lab - where we're bringing science from our homes, to yours!
A home-made water cycle is a great way to demonstrate the process of evaporation, precipitation and condensation.
To make a water cycle all you need is a plastic bottle, a little bit of water and some paper and pens!
First, you’ll need to put a small amount of water in the bottle, so it’s about 1/5 full. You can add a little bit of food colouring if you want to make it look a bit more like the sea or a lake, but it works without. Make sure you screw the lid on tight.
Turn the bottle upside down, so the wider part of the bottle is at the top. You might find it helpful to use an empty glass as a stand, to keep the bottle upright.
Next draw a sunshine and clouds on your paper and cut them out. Stick these to the bottle to represent the weather. Heat from the sun is what gives the water cycle it’s energy. The clouds are where the evaporated gas is condensing and forming back into a liquid.
Find somewhere in the sun to place your bottle. After an hour or so you should see condensation forming on the bottle. As the day goes on keep an eye on your bottle. As the condensation continues to form you should get droplets of water running down the side of the bottle.
If you want to try and speed the process up, you could experiment with temperature. Try putting the bottle in different places to warm up quicker or put a cool pack on the top to see if you can get the water vapour to condense quicker!
