We recently flew Thai Airways Royal Silk business class from Guangzhou to Bangkok on the latest A350-900 aircraft, with a one year old screaming baby. We booked the airfare through Booking.com, and found that this particular flight’s aircraft was A350-900, and the price was cheaper than the other airlines such as China Southern airlines, so we immediately booked the airfares. It’s New Year holidays period, and I was surprised that the airfare is quite reasonable.
Our journey starts from Guangzhou Baiyun international airport, which is 1 hour drive north of Guangzhou city, it’s one of the busiest airports in the world, handling 40 million passengers per year.
Before boarding, we checked out their business lounge – Premium Lounge. As I expected, the food selections are so-so, not many selections, and of course, mostly are Chinese food. The lounge is pretty quiet, and nothing really fancy, and it does has a shower area for you to refresh before flying.
This is our family holiday in China and Thailand, and we have a one year old baby travelling with us. It's not easy, but at least the business class seat has a little bit more room for him. His fare costs 10% of adult fares, but without a seat of course.
The business class seating is 1 2 1 configuration, with total of 32 seats. Our seats are 15k and 16k, next to the windows, as I love the window seats – always enjoy the views. The Royal Silk business class seat is not very spacious, but cozy, and the grey and purple color combination looks amazing and modern, the leg room is great too.
Next to the window there is a small compartment with the charging ports and a TV control, noise cancellation headset is also available. They also provide us with a warm face tower which comes very handy to refresh ourselves in this winter day.
Once onboard, they provided some drink and champagne, however, we did not feel the personal warmly welcome atmosphere, and feel more like we are just numbers. In comparison to my recent flights with Qantas, the services are well above and beyond as soon as you get onto the plane.
However, until they started serving lunch, this particular crew member did have a chat with me, and he was polite and professional, and he did bring the service level up with a bit of personal touch. From then onwards, the service seemed getting better.
Overall, it was a very nice experience, even thought it lack of personal touch at the beginning, but I will for sure fly Thai Airway business class again in the future.
