According to a decades old account, a flight of bombers which were unable to complete their bombing runs were returning to their base in England. Prior to landing it was standard operating procedure to release their bombs over the English Channel as it was too dangerous to attempt to land with them still in their bomb bays. The bombers did just that.
Unfortunately what appears to have been the Norseman aircraft carrying Glenn Miller was flying at a low altitude below the bombers. Although the plane apparently dodged several of the falling bombs, one either struck it or the pilot managed to stall the aircraft, and it spiraled downward and crashed into the Channel. Given the numerous difficulties occurring due to the ongoing war, no significant rescue/recovery plan was undertaken in the area and it was apparently several weeks before the bomber was linked to Miller’s missing aircraft.
Miller died either when the bomb struck his plane or when the plane crashed into the Channel. His remains have never been recovered.
