Election season is upon us! Will Rogers was a celebrated figure for his political insight, comment, and wit in his day. Rogers produced a series of three films for Hal Roach and this month we highlight Going to Congress, released in June of 1924. Although he considered himself as an "observer" in politics, Rogers served as a honorary mayor of Beverly Hills, California, for a short period, and supported Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidential candidacy. Rogers regularly commented on the political news of the day and his series of films produced for Hal Roach represents his satirical approach toward tackling the political world.
This film is unfortunately a product of its time and as such contains humor that, while commonplace when it was made, is today considered insensitive or offensive. Flicker Alley presents this film for its historical value but does not condone any racial, ethnic, or cultural stereotypes.
