In this video Registered Dietitian Christy Brissette from the ELLICSR Kitchen and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre talks about all the amazing nutritional benefits of the onion.
Onions:
- Are rich in nutrients such as vitamin C and fibre.
- Contain plant chemicals such as crocetin and sulfuric compounds which may help to reduce blood pressure
- Some cell and animal studies have shown that these compounds may prevent cancer cells from growing
- Part of the Allium family. Studies have shown that consuming foods from this family may help to reduce the risk of some of the major forms of cancer.
- Cut them finely before cooking to release those sulfuric compounds
- Look for colourful varieties to get the most antioxidants
