So, NCAA President Charlie Baker proposed a transformative model for college athletics, suggesting the creation of a new subdivision within Division I. This subdivision would enable select schools to manage Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) arrangements internally, adapting to the evolving landscape of collegiate sports.
Recent discussions among multiple college presidents and sports executives, as reported by The Athletic's Andrew Marchand and Stewart Mandel, have centered around the concept of a "Super League" model specifically tailored for football. Under this proposal, non-revenue sports would remain within the existing conference format.
The group spearheading this initiative, dubbed "College Sports Tomorrow," boasts notable figures such as NFL executive Brian Rolapp, Philadelphia 76ers owner David Blitzer, and Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud, among others. The envisioned structure would feature 70 permanent members, comprising the Power Four teams and Notre Dame, organized into ten-team divisions. These permanent members would remain immune to relegation, while an additional division would accommodate teams promoted from a secondary tier, akin to the promotion and relegation system observed in European soccer.
The notion of relegation in college football has been previously discussed, with even former Alabama coach Nick Saban weighing in on the topic in a 2022 interview. While "College Sports Tomorrow" presented their proposal to the ACC Board of Directors in February, they have yet to engage with other Power Four conferences such as the Big Ten, Big 12, or SEC.
