The Second Servile War occurred when slaves on the island of Sicily rebelled against the Roman Republic, but ultimately failed to achieve their goal. This conflict lasted from 104 BC to 100 BC, and coincided with the consul Gaius Marius' efforts to recruit soldiers for his campaign against the Cimbri in Cisalpine Gaul. It was the rebellion that preceded the famous Spartacus, whose uprising would take place a few years later.
