Tips & tricks on white tail deer hunting in South Texas. Today on Wide Open Sportsman we head south of Tilden, TX to visit my friends on the Chaparral Ranch. We’re trophy deer hunting in big deer country. Freer, TX is known for their big bucks. When you tell someone that you’re hunting outside of Freer, they usually say “wow - monster deer roam those hills”.
You might wonder why big deer are in an area? And why 75 miles to the west they’re much smaller. What makes Freer so good? It’s a combination of factors but the biggest factor is food sources. The brush country there is loaded with high protein naturally occurring vegetation. So these deer have access to basically natural steroids in their diet. So they grow big horns.
This ranch is a high fenced ranch over 4,000 acres - so it’s big - but the land owner had a breeding operation going on there for several years. He then, which is not very typical, closed the deer breed operations and let all his breeding bucks and bred does roam free on the property. It was a MLD program so I did not have to use one of my deer tags to shoot this buck. The ranch had tags for me. I did however have to have a deer hunting license. I chose to sit up on top of the tank dam that looked out over a couple of feeders and see if I could make the hunt come together.
I saw this buck come in way down the sendero, I put my crosshairs from my Leupold gold ring scope right behind the shoulder and made the shot with my 7mm-08. Some of my friends kid me for using a 7mm-08. They say “Dave, that’s a ladies rifle” and I say “you may say that, but according to David Dury at Dury’s Gun Shop, it’s the most popular caliber he sells for white tail deer hunting in South Texas.” Why Do You say? It’s a very flat shooting bullet up to 225 yards and it has very light recoil. Equipped with a jewel trigger and Remington 700 action, it’s my go-to deer rifle without a doubt. I probably killed 15 bucks with this rifle over the last few years.
I hope you like the show but I’ll leave you one thing - one tip - you might use to build confidence. Take 3 or 4 16oz coke bottles and fill them with water. Then use those as targets in the field where you hunt. Set them up on a stump or on the ground and get back 150 yards and shoot them. With a 3 legged Primos rest and dove hunting chair. That way, all you need is a backpack with your water bottles, dove hunting chair, 3 legged rest and your deer rifle on a sling and you’re mobile. Go set up one place and you’ll make a good shoot - seeing your confidence. You don't need a bullseye to take down a whitetail buck. If you can hit that water bottle, you’re golden. I’ll see you in a Wide Open Outdoor Adventure
