📍Texel is one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, off the coast of the Netherlands. It's known for the bird-rich Dunes of Texel National Park, with its sandy beaches, grass-topped dunes and forest trails. In the park, Ecomare is a nature museum, aquarium and wildlife sanctuary for seals and birds. On the island's northern tip, the 19th-century Texel Lighthouse offers panoramic views of the North Sea and Wadden Sea.
The island of Texel is a paradise for beach vacationers, with its 30 km long sandy beach. However, Texel has even more to offer: seven villages, each lovelier than the last, and unique nature reserves. Texel can also be reached quickly. You'll be on the island in only twenty minutes with the ferry from Den Helder.
📍 The Afsluitdijk is a major dam and causeway in the Netherlands. It was constructed between 1927 and 1932 and runs from Den Oever in North Holland province to the village of Zurich in Friesland province, over a length of 32 kilometres and a width of 90 metres, at an initial height of 7.25 metres above sea level.
The Afsluitdijk has been protecting the Netherlands
from the sea for more than eighty years. However, the dike no longer meets the current requirements for flood protection. Rijkswaterstaat is therefore going to reinforce the Afsluitdijk. We plan to make the dike overflow-resistant by replacing the outer cladding and will strengthen the sluices and locks. We are also going to install powerful pumps in the sluice complex at Den Oever so that more surplus water can be discharged from the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea. The Afsluitdijk's new pumping station is expected to be the largest in Europe.
