(12 Jun 2014) Thousands of Iraqis continued to flee al-Qaida-inspired militants on Thursday, following their takeover of two key Sunni-dominated cities.
Kurdish Defence Forces, the Peshmerga, took control of a checkpoint in Ghazr, which was vacated by the Iraqi Army.
Hisham, an Iraqi soldier who fled fighting in Mosul said: "just like the last regime collapsed when the Americans came, the same has happened again and everyone fled their positions in panic."
He added that their commander had ordered them to leave their vehicles and weapons to ISIL.
ISIL militants have vowed to march to Baghdad.
