Flying Foxes are giant bats. They can be impressive. Wingspan can exceed 1 meter. They gather in giant groups of thousands. They are incredibly loud. When the group is leaving its roosting site, there is like a massive cloud of those animals in the sky. No reason to be afraid : they only eat fruits ! They are the most numerous mammal that you can spot in Australia. This behaviour is known as "Bat swarm".
I have seen many large flocks of them in Northern Territory and in Queensland. I had very good spots in Pine Creek, Darwin, Mary River, Katherine Gorge, and Eungella National Park but they are widespread and can be found in many places.
I had the oppotunity to identify 2 species :The Black Flying fox (Pteropus alecto), which is the larger one, and the Little Red Flying Fox (Pteropus scapulatus).
