"Tradition" is an interesting thing. For some, it conjures up warm feelings of retaining the best of the past, and for others it's a bit of a dirty word representing things that need to be left in the past. Of course, many fall somewhere in between. This tension around the word "tradition" is perhaps nowhere more pronounced than in Christianity. Some, like the Orthodox, have a very high value for tradition, while others, like the churches I grew up in, think it's nothing but stagnation and gets in the way of a personal relationship with Jesus. In my own life, I've been on a bit of a journey learning about the Christian tradition and trying to understand how I ought to relate to it. In this video, Fr. John Baker of Christ the Savior Orthodox Church shares an Orthodox perspective on the importance of tradition.
