(2 Sep 1976) RR7635A PHILIPPINES: THE MINDANAO QUAKE
4,000 dead, 4,000 missing (probably dead), 200,000
homeless - the stark facts about the worst natural
disaster ever to hit the Philippines. On August 17th
1976, a severe earthquake followed by a devastating
tidal wave struck the coastal areas of the southern
island of Mindanao. This report records the appalling
damage, the rescue work and the organisation of
relief. It also discusses how the disaster is likely to
effect the struggle of Mindanao's Moslem rebels for
secession from Manila.
