A raised stencil can have a big impact on your furniture; and help to camouflage an imperfect surface.
But, there are a few key steps to ensure success!
- prep your surface as you would normally to paint
- plan out your stencil placement, keeping repeats and alignment in mind
- tape off areas that you do not want a raised pattern, consider edges
- I prefer using @DixieBellePaint Mud as my raised stencil medium as it has a long “open” time
- tape your stencil in place
- I’ve found a plastic spatula/trowel works best for applying your mud
- smooth the mud across and try to reduce lines; makes it easier when sanding later
- lift the stencil by using two opposite corners and lifting straight up… you’ll avoid smearing your work
- do not try to apply another section until first section is dry
- you can use a heat gun to dry the first section enough to apply section section
- repeat until surface is covered
- allow to dry overnight
- using a high grit sand paper/sanding block; sand lightly to knock back any high points
- seal with a spray sealer; I use Easy Peasy Spray Wax
Mud can be reactivated with water so spraying vs brushing is key
- you can paint is stain to get your desired finish!
