Food (Jídlo) - The Balance Of Surreal Humour And Morbid Shocks
This week's video essay focuses on Jan Švankmajer, a legend of Czech filmmaking and animation (the director is also a major influence on the works of Terry Gilliam), and his short film known as "Food" in English, and "Jídlo" in Czech. A surrealist comedy blending live-action with stop-motion animation, Food is about the three essential daily meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, the film isn't straightforward, as it delves into a darkly playful sense of humour that may be somewhat disturbing for those unfamiliar with Švankmajer's sense of humour!
