“Lexus TX unveiled as Lexus’ third SUV launch this week”. It has been a busy week for Lexus. First, the LBX, then the new GX, and now we have the TX. Here’s what you need to know about it.
The Lexus TX is a premium F-SUV built on Toyota’s unibody TNGA-K platform. This is essentially the premium version of the Toyota Grand Highlander. With a length of 5,159mm and a width of 1,989mm, it makes it on par with the BMW X7, but the TX is shorter than the X7, at 1,780mm tall.
The Lexus TX comes with three powertrains. The first is a 2.4-litre turbocharged 4cyl unit (TX 350) producing 279PS and 430Nm of torque. Front wheel drive is standard in the US (optional all-wheel drive). Canada gets standard AWD. The transmission is an 8AT.
There are two hybrids in the TX. The first uses a 2.4-litre turbocharged 4cyl hybridised unit (TX 500h), producing 371PS and 554Nm of torque. The second is a PHEV (TX 550h+), utilising a 3.5-litre V6, and a combined output of 412PS with an unspecified torque figure. The PHEV can travel on electric mode for 53km (33 miles). All hybrids use the Direct4 AWD system.
The Lexus TX comes with three row seating, either as a 6 or 7 seater. Trunk capacity with the seats up is 569 litres, with maximum trunk space being 2,476 litres with the seats folded.
There are four trim levels, Standard, Premium, Luxury and F Sport Performance.
Inside is a 14-inch centre display, and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster which is digital.
The Lexus TX will be built in the Indiana plant, the first time a Lexus model is built there. Consequently, the TX is designed specifically for North America, so a European launch is ruled out. The TX 350 and TX 500h will go on sale in the US in the coming months; the TX 550h+ will come in a later date.
