Famous for its strong fishing heritage, arts and crafts scene, and wonderful seafood, it is also well known for its yearly events, in particular its Christmas Lights Festival. It has also become well known due to the popular children's book The Mousehole Cat.

A small and very safe beach is located in a sheltered part of the harbour which is popular with families, with safe bathing ideal for small children, with a larger, rockier beach also located on the outskirts of the village.
