Following 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood", Hollywood seemed hesitant to be seen to rival the success of the picture, leading to several 'son of Robin Hood' adventures. The second of these types, 1950's "Rogues of Sherwood Forest", almost leans in to Errol Flynn's famous outing, reading almost as a sequel to the classic film. Not only are several costumes reused, notably one of Basil Rathbone's here sported by Lowell Gilmore as the Count of Flanders, but Alan Hale makes his third and final appearance as Little John, after appearing opposite both Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks in 1922.

"Rogues of Sherwood Forest" sees Robert, Earl of Huntingdon, the son of Robin Hood, standing up to the oppression of Prince John, now King John after Richard's death. Robert and Little John bring the band back together, with Friar Tuck, Alan a'Dale and WIll Scarlett returning to the greenwood. Rescinding all the good deeds done in Richard's reign, John seeks to make his enemies pay with their lives. With the help of the brave and resourceful ward, Marianne, Robert leads the rebellion as the reincarnated Robin Hood. Yet Archbishop Stephen Langton has other ideas than just rebellion, convincing the men of Sherwood Forest that something more tangible, a bill of rights, must bring John into line...
